Prairiebird Pastures’ story starts on Missouri grasslands, where food entrepreneurs, Jake and Chelsea Davis, owners of Root Cellar, are collaborating with the ACR program, ranchers, and conservationists to make land work for birds while bringing delicious beef products to consumers in the process. Chelsea and Jake are experienced with building better food systems. Their latest venture, Prairiebird Pastures, aims to bring more local beef to market while protecting grassland bird habitat---grazing cattle with bird habitat in mind. Native birds and pollinators can thrive on the grasslands they evolved with, while deep-rooted prairie plants foster healthier air, streams, and soil.
Prairiebird Pastures works with regional family farmers and ranchers committed to treating their animals with care, creating healthy native prairies, and making these vital ecosystems of Missouri sustainable havens for grassland birds. Prairiebird Pastures beef is 100% grassfed and is raised without hormones or antibiotics. They buy the whole animal, which ensures beef is raised locally and the fabric of the region’s food system is strengthened.
Prairiebird Pastures beef products are sold exclusively through Root Cellar, an independent retailer and USDA-designated food hub in Columbia. Through its partnership with Audubon, Root Cellar became the first retail location in the state of Missouri to offer Audubon-certified ranchland products. With little effort, Root Cellar’s customers began to recognize the conservation value of purchasing Prairiebird Pastures beef. Increased interest in the Conservation Ranching Program brought new customers, which led to increased sales and brand loyalty among all customers. Consumer reactions continue to be overwhelmingly positive with praise for product flavor, texture, and their connection to sustainable wildlife conservation.
