2019 Flight Crew Important Dates

  • Application Deadline: February 15th
  • Program Starts: June 8th
  •  Program Ends: July 31st


Two Position Types in 2020:

  • Flight Crew Member (8 positions)
  • Flight Crew Team Lead (1 position, college-level)

Flight Crew Members are part of a conservation-focused job corps for young adults and receive 8-weeks of paid, hands-on work experience in wildlife conservation, recreation, and environmental education. For the first 5 weeks of Flight Crew 2020, Crew Members receive training in water conservation, wildlife conservation, and land restoration and participate in local conservation projects. Crew Members network with environmental organization professionals and explore career opportunities. During the final 3 weeks, Members transition to become camp counselors for Little Creek Summer Camp (LCSC). Flight Crew Members utilize their experiences and training to facilitate outdoor education programs to youth ranging from 3rd to 5th grade in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. Crew Members enthusiastically help campers develop their outdoor skills through activities like pond ecology, archery, campfire cooking, canoeing, mammal exploration, and more. Working in small group settings, the Crew Members serve as a positive role model, demonstrate a genuine interest in their campers, foster campers’ curiosity of nature and the outdoors, and create fond and lasting memories.


  • Attend scheduled trainings
  • Maintain a positive, focused, and enthusiastic attitude
  • Attend professional development meetings with STL Youth Jobs
  • Participate in leadership and team building initiatives with fellow Crew Members
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • (Flight Crew Team Lead) Facilitate team debriefs and teambuilding exercises
  • (Flight Crew Team Lead) Serve as a mentor to new Flight Crew Members

Part One (June 8th-July 3rd)

  • Work approximately 24 hours/week June 8th-July 3rd
  • Show a genuine interest in learning conservation issues in our region
  • Participate in new and ongoing conservation projects
  • Work as a team with other Crew Members to practice facilitating environmental education lessons
  • Show an interest in exploring possible environmental careers

Part Two (July 6th-July 31st)

  • 35 hours/week July 6th-July 31st
  • Manage small groups of campers
  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities
  • Assist in managing the Little Creek Summer Camp field trip
  • Serve as a positive role model for all campers
  • Show a genuine interest in campers and help encourage each camper’s success while at camp
  • Ensure that campers are safe and feel included
  • (Flight Crew Team Lead) Facilitate all-camp announcements, games, and coordination
  • (Flight Crew Team Lead) Manage Flight Crew Member challenges, concerns, and celebrate successes


  • Must be in high school or a recent graduate from high school
  • (Flight Crew Team Lead) Must have completed high school
  • Live in North St. Louis County or City
  • Enjoy working with kids
  • Like being in the outdoors
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Ability to stay positive and encouraging to campers who may be apprehensive or nervous about a particular activity
  • Must have physical ability to lead & participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, canoeing, team building initiatives, building campfires, physical games
  • Must be able to put campers first above their own needs/wants
  • Must be reliable and punctual
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to Little Creek Nature Area and The Audubon Center at Riverlands
  • (Flight Crew Team Lead) Previous experience as Flight Crew Member preferred


  • Hourly wage: $10.00/ hour
  • First Aid and CPR Certification provided
