Explore with the Corps: Stewardship Series

This monthly presentation series will bring you into the world of environmental stewardship along the Mighty Mississippi as experts in ecology, forestry, and land management give you a behind-the-scenes look into what it takes to manage our diverse habitats. Each month, a different stewardship project from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rivers Project Office will be highlighted followed by a short outdoor activity so you can become a land steward for a day.

June : Floodplain forest Monitoring  and Management

  • June 4th 10-11:30 am
  • Forest monitoring along the Mississippi River; the process of data-drive forest management
  • Tie in with tree ID and measurements

How does the Corps decide where and how to manage forest habitat? Learn about the journey from data collection to habitat improvement as terrestrial ecologist Dr. Lyle Guyon from the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) and USACE forester Brian Stoff explain the process of how we collect forestry data and how that data helps us make management decisions.  After the presentation, you can take what you learn and put it into practice during a tutorial on how identify and measure native floodplain trees!
